Swift Creek Fire Department History

1960
Swift Creek Fire Department incorporates June 7th, 1960, as “Swift Creek Rural Fire Department”.
(Founded by the members of Macedonia community)
First Board of Directors is Elected
First Fire Chief elected; Chief Joe Womble.
First Fire apparatus are a 1961 Chevrolet 70 series with a Howe pumper that was capable of flowing 500GPM, and carrying 500 Gallons of water. As well as a Tanker constructed in Chief Womble’s garage, by mounting a 1,000 gallon tank (donated from N.C. Butane company) on a 1946 Chevrolet 1 ½ ton truck purchased from Pine State Creamery for $150.
Received Civil Defense Surplus property after the dissolution of the Western Boulevard Fire Department that included miscellaneous equipment, $1,000, and two apparatus.
The vehicles received were….

1943 Dodge 3/4 ton brush truck with 50 GPM pump and 300 gallon tank

Jeep with a two-way radio to be used by the Chief.

 

Also purchased is a 7 1/2 horsepower siren at a cost of $790.50.

 

1961

 

On February 18th the first barbecue supper held for purpose of fundraising.


Temporary Fire station built in tin shed, and offered rent free by Lewis Furr, on Tryon Rd.

 

Wake County Fire Commission establishes a four-mile radius as Swift Creeks fire district.

Wake County also approves $100 per month in support.

 

Fire Station moves to 6115 Holly Springs Rd. leased for 18 years from Mr. Earl Franklin.

 

NC Fire Rating Bureau approves reduction of fire insurance rates in Swift Creek Fire District.

 

Stanford Mizelle becomes Fire Chief.

 

1962
SCFD answers 27 calls between July 1, 1961 and June 30.

Construction of permanent fire station approved by Board of Directors.

 

1963
L. D. Warner becomes Fire Chief.

SCFD answers 34 calls between July 1, 1961 and June 30.

 

1964
SCFD answers 34 calls between July 1, 1961 and June 30.

 

1971
SCFD budget gets started by support from tax base of Swift Creek residents.  Five cents from every one-hundred dollars of tax dollars of those in the district is budgeted by the County to SCFD.

 

1976
Received apparatus: 1976 Ford / Pierce pumper.

 

1983

Current fire station was built at 5825 Tryon Rd.

 

1985-1987

We received a Pierce pumper, which was used as Engine 3.

 

Received apparatus: tanker, 2500 gallon capacity.

1988

Harold Estes becomes Fire Chief.

 

1990
We received a 1990 Chevy 3500 brush truck.

 

1991
Robert Estes becomes Fire Chief.


1992
Received apparatus: tanker, 1500 gallon capacity.

1993
Began First Responder services in the fall of 1993.

 

1994
 Edward Brinson becomes Fire Chief.

 

1999

Received apparatus: 1999 Pierce Dash 2000 pumper, which now serves as Engine 1.

Transition to county-wide service tax for operational and capital funding

2000

Received apparatus: 1999 Peirce  Saber Service truck that now serves as Rescue 1.

 

2001
SCFD starts offering Extrication services

Received apparatus: 2001 brush truck, which now serves as Brush 4.

2002

Scott McCollum becomes Fire Chief.

Received apparatus: 2006 Tanker

2007
Received apparatus: 2006 Peirce Contender now serves as Engine 3.
